Year End 2024

Energy Consumption End of Year Summary 2024

As we approach the end of the year, I thought it would be interesting to see how we did on energy consumption and billing for the year. This will be the first full year were we have everything installed.

Lets Look at the raw numbers

We imported over 21.5MWh of electricity, which if we had been on a single tariff of around 27p would have been around £5809.

When we take into account the exporting it takes the unit price down to 3p/kWh and costs around £2.20 per day all in.

We have three Electric Vehicles, in total 7,600kWh was used to charge the cars. Costing £532 and giving a driving range of 24,500 Miles, which in petrol would have cost around (Assuming £1.40/litre)  £4,200.

We also generated 3710kWh of Solar, some of which was used to run the house, and the rest was exported.

The house takes around 11.4MWh (21518 - 7600 + 3710 - 6200 = 11,428 (Total import - Car charging + solar generation - exported) which at 27p would have cost £3,085.56 + £227 (standing charge) = £3,312.56

My cost before all this work would have been 3,312 + 4200 = £7,512

There for my savings for the year is £7,512 - £803.36 = £6,709

Total savings for the year £6,709.

This really does show there are significant savings to be had. These real world numbers show I'm saving over £6,500 a year and so can confirm my very early payback of less than 3 years of the initial outlay of all the equipment. I'm not including the cost of the EVs as I needed to replace my cars anyway.

Octopus energy also offered a few free Electricity sessions over the year. This has also netted me around £30 worth of peak power or 111kWh.
